Transnational practices and structures are ubiquitous and well documented. Yet there is no unified theory of transnationalism. This second revised and updated edition proposes to view transnationalism as an outcome of cross-border processes. Transnationalism does not resemble a structure, but refers to what happens within structures and focuses on its consequences. The book argues why it is insufficient to project models hitherto conceived in terms of nation-states onto a broader and territorially conceived scale, as is common in research on forms of cross-border connectivity. Transnationalism as a paradigm is interested in reconfigurations of power and arrangements of local cultures that produce new meanings due to the porosity of nation-states and global connectivity. The transnational paradigm helps to understand the clash of multiple affiliations, practices, and dispositions.
