; What stance on “Eastern Renaissance” did Ranke and Burckhardt take? This subject needed to make a survey of the German-Romantic idea of the East, focusing on Herder’s anthropology. Notoriously, Ranke and Burckhardt were very different historians, but they shared a negative opinion on “Eastern Renaissance” and its main assumption: the corrupted modernity of European culture. Topics covered include the role of violence in the history, the meaning of "sacrifice", the danger of "flattening" and depersonalization in the metropolitan life. The French historian Quinet serves as reference point.
