For years, the United States has been the leading superpower, championing its western ideology to developing countries. Recently, this power has been challenged in a number of different ways and regions that have been crucial to United States national security interests. The main challenger presents itself as China, with a number of initiatives aimed at challenging the American influence and presenting itself as a power that is more attractive than the United States. As the United States continues to divert its presence and resources away from the Middle East, China has begun to fill the void. The recent messy U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has raised doubt on behalf of Washington’s NATO and Arab allies regarding its commitment to them. China has put forth a number of initiatives that signal it wants to expand its influence in developing countries. In this paper, I will analyze the intent and implications of the spread of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Asian Infrastructure Bank and the Sino-Iran Deal. Each of these initiatives exemplify the different ways in which China is expanding its economic and influential foothold in the Middle East.
