This article focuses on the study of the fantastic geography of India described in the Letter of Prester John. The analysis dwells on the mythical-symbolic imagery rooted in the geo-ethnographic works of Graeco-Roman authors describing the Indian land. In particular, several references that trace back to the writings of Herodotus, Ctesias, Aristobulus, Onesicritus, Megasthenes, Arrian, Pliny the Elder, Solinus, and Isidore are examined. In addition, special attention is paid to the tradition dating back to the Alexander Romance as a direct source of the letter. In this regard, connections with Alexander's Letter to Aristotle are examined. Finally, the genesis of the references to the Amazons and Brahmans, which constitute key elements for the representation of a utopian land, is traced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
