The ports of the British-protected Ionian islands (1809-1864) managed gradually and dynamically to carve a place for themselves in the trading world of the Mediterranean and to develop close connections with the North Atlantic economy. This was an important development which enabled them to shed their dependence on commercial ties with the central Mediterranean and to move into a much broader world of shipping and trade. In short, the islands increasingly became important stops on the main Mediterranean trade routes connecting the ports of the "agricultural" eastern Mediterranean with the large ports of the industrializing West. The entrance of the Ionian islands into these new realms not only functioned positively for British trade in the Mediterranean but also strengthened the position of the islands themselves in the commercial world of the Mediterranean and beyond.
