The article discusses Arctic-related issues that are of interest to the U.S. Congress. Opportunities for transport, extraction of potential oil and gas resources, and expanded tourism and fishing are described as the consequences of projected ice-free seasons in the Arctic by the late 2030s. Territorial claims on the Arctic are being prepared by Arctic coastal states such as Russia, Canada, Denmark and Norway. Negotiations between the U.S. and Canada over a binational boundary in the Beaufort Sea are also discussed.
