is introductory study to the special issue Interdisciplinary Encounters between China and Argentina proposes a historical analysis of indirect contacts between China and modern Argentina, especially the River Plate region, from the early seventeenth century to the late nineteenth century, when a burgeoning Chinese immigration to Argentina was recorded in national censuses. e analysis of indirect contacts between these two parts of the world is divided into three historical periods. e first focuses on cartographic and geographical works elaborated by Jesuit missionaries on Chinese soil in the early seventeenth century, providing geographical information as well as descriptions of local populations in America. e second period examines representations of China in the River Plate region under the influence of Enlightenment thinkers and their ideas. e third period, between mid and late nineteenth century, is marked by the absence of these indirect contacts. However, the closeness of Great Britain as regards both China and modern Argentina respectively, encouraged "globalizing" views by certain intellectuals and essayists in the first half of the twentieth century who retrospectively connected these parts of the world. Este estudio introductorio al dossier especial Encuentros Interdisciplinarios entre China y Argentina propone un análisis histórico de los contactos indirectos entre China y la actual Argentina, especialmente el espacio rioplatense, desde el siglo XVII hasta finales del siglo XIX, cuando comienza una incipiente inmigración china en Argentina registrada en censos nacionales. El análisis de estos contactos indirectos se centra en distintos períodos históricos. El primero examina la cartografía y tratados geográficos elaborados por misioneros jesuitas en China en la primera mitad del siglo XVII, que proporcionaron información geográfica así como descripciones de ciertas poblaciones locales de América. El segundo período examina las representaciones de China en el mundo ilustrado rioplantense en el umbral de la independencia de España. El tercero, que se extiende desde mediados hasta fines del siglo XIX, está marcado por la ausencia de contactos indirectos. No obstante, en este apartado se analiza cómo la cercanía de Gran Bretaña en torno a estas respectivas partes del mundo estimuló miradas "globalizadoras" por parte de ciertos pensadores e intelectuales en la primera mitad del siglo XX, las cuales generaron, retrospectivamente, una proximidad analítica entre ellas.
