In foreign language teaching, the study of place names provides an opportunity for cooperation of several branches of knowledge and can tell us much about major socio-cultural influences on communities of speakers. Introducing placenames in language teaching can give students tools for thinking about how places get named, following a cross-disciplinary approach. This paper concentrates on English language toponymy, due to the world-wide presence of English-speaking communities. Starting with a brief presentation of the relevant terminology, it illustrates the main historical factors shaping English toponymy and offers a series of suggestions for cross-disciplinary projects and activities in English language and culture teaching. Nell’insegnamento di una lingua straniera lo studio dei toponimi permette la collaborazione fra discipline diverse e può rivelare molto riguardo alle principali influenze socio-culturali esercitate su una comunità di parlanti; l’introduzione della toponomastica nell’insegnamento linguistico – con un approccio transdisciplinare – può offrire agli studenti strumenti utili a comprendere come vengano creati i toponimi. Questo articolo si concentra sulla toponomastica in lingua inglese, a motivo della presenza mondiale di comunità anglofone. Partendo da una breve presentazione della terminologia pertinente, il testo illustra i principali fattori storici che hanno determinato la toponomastica inglese e offre alcuni suggerimenti per progetti e attività multidisciplinari per l’insegnamento di lingua e cultura inglesi.
