The work aimed to analyze the viability of a tourist itinerary in the Historical Center of the city of São Luís-MA/Brazil with the theme of the legacy of the black African people as part of the local historical-cultural identity. The proposal presented, besides giving visibility to the history of a people that strongly contributed to the formation of Maranhão's culture, shows itself as an alternative for the development of thematic routes as options beyond those already available in the market, allowing new experiences to the tourist. The itinerary presented here is differentiated also for not focusing on the suffering of black people and their families during and after the slavery period, as this approach is more commonly found in culture houses, museums and exhibitions. The script highlights Maranhão's cultural heritage seen from the perspective of the black people as protagonists and active participants in the cultural, architectural and historical legacy and thus disseminate and value this heritage. Bibliographic and documental research was carried out, as well as on-site visits to create the route, considering the dimensions of the experience economy: learning, entertainment, evasion, and aesthetics. Once the itinerary was created, it was tested and a qualitative research was done after its execution with the participants who followed the itinerary. As a result it can be seen that the proposed thematic itinerary is feasible, and considered innovative, because it escapes from the routine and repetitive tourist itinerary, which is common in the Historical Center of cities, including São Luís. Thus, the product proposition was well evaluated for bringing the visitor closer to the local black culture. The thematic itinerary allowed the contact with sensations and the escape from the traditional for those who decide to visit the destination, providing a differentiated experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
