The diversity of spiders in selected sacred groves of the Kannur District, Kerala, was studied following a systematised collection method in four sampling stations: Madayi, Thekkumbad, Mooriyad and Kaivelikkal. The study was conducted in the period from September 2018 to September 2019. Totally, 102 species belonging to 73 genera and 18 families were recorded from the selected sacred groves of Kannur. Mooriyad had the highest species richness, while the lowest species richness was recorded from Kaivelikkal. Guild structure analyses of documented spiders revealed six functional groups: stalkers, orb-web builders, ambushers, space web builders, ground runners and foliage runners. Spider distribution and diversity differed considerably among different sacred groves and much of this difference could be explained by the architectural properties of the habitat. More diverse vegetation supported a higher number of spider species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
