The theme of the present paper is a tendency in Latvian literature that flourished from 1960s to late 1980s and has so far not been subjected to research. It is the phenomenon of short stories with science fiction formulae appearing in contemporary humor magazines published in Soviet Latvia, mainly in „Dadzis“ ('The Thistle') and „Dadža kalendārs“ ('The Thistle Annual') as well as in the short story collections by the regular authors of these periodicals. In these stories the most renowned satirists of their age -- such as Andrejs Skailis, Žanis Ezītis, Miermīlis Steiga, Maija Kudapa and others -- use the formal elements of science fiction genre in order to speak about the local and global problems of the Soviet reality. The disguise of humor and fantastic tale allowed them to emphasize and ridicule the negative aspects of Soviet life such as the lack of everyday goods, bureaucracy, censorship, etc. -- problems the authors of "serious literature" rarely dared to touch upon. The themes of these stories make it possible to divide them in several broad categories that the paper discusses separately: such as stories with the elements of classic science fiction (i. e., extraterrestrial intelligence, time travel, fantastic inventions), stories using the elements of fairytales, stories using religious plotlines, etc. A separate category is formed by the stories in which the authors make fun of their own profession, i. e., stories about writers and their life under the censorship and various restrictions to creative mind the Soviet Union enforced. Due to socio-political reasons this phenomenon of humorous science fiction obviously existed only for a couple of decades. However, it must be recognized a specific way of metaphoric language and a sort of hybrid genre the writers created specifically to talk about things and phenomena everyone knew and almost nobody dared to talk about.
