This study examined intercultural family communication in the context of acculturation. Individuals adapting to a new culture must identify, evaluate, navigate, and negotiate cross-cultural differences that influence their relationships; a process that has received little attention. A qualitative analysis of data collected through interviews with Americans and Swedes generated three themes: gender roles and equality; intergenerational equality, and inclusive/exclusive family units. In Sweden, gender roles are less differentiated than in the U.S.; children are perceived as more equal to adults and allowed more independence; and families are less inclusive. These differences and associated relational dialectics create both challenges and opportunities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
