The article takes a look at the introduction and cultivation of New World fruit plants such as papaya, pineapple and guava during the 16th and 17th centuries. It cites pineapple as one of the earliest fruits brought by the Portuguese to India in 1550 which were cultivated in many parts of western India from the late 16th century. Another American fruit introduced in India was papaya which came to India via the Philippines and Malacca and the cashew tree introduced from Brazil to India.
