An essay is presented on aspects of engagement in the novel "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad. It argues that the colonial enterprise in Africa is presented as a threat that affects the Africans who are suffering at the hands of the colonizers as well as Westerners like the characters of Marlow and Kurtz in the novel. It also examines the mystery surrounding Marlow's experiences in Africa and unwillingness to engage with reality.
